Learn the art of Celestial Navigation
from a Master Mariner and author of "The Celestial Navigation Mystery: Solved."

Join us for a  comprehensive five-session course that will have you navigating with the sun, moon, stars, and planets using H.O. 249 and the Nautical Almanac. Subjects include care and use of the sextant, time, sight reduction, plotting, running fix, and more

We will also offer an optional sight-taking session near Liberty Sailing School at the Delaware River at no additional charge  A sextant is not required to take the course, but you will need one if you take the optional sun sight session.

The Textbook "The Celestial Navigation Mystery: Solved", worksheets, and plotting sheets are included in the cost of the course.  Plotting tools are required.  Parallel rules, dividers and the Weems & Plath Marine Navigation Start Finder 2102-D will be available at the course for purchase or you are welcome to bring your own.

Pre-requisites:
Students should have a working knowledge of coastal navigation, including plotting, latitude and longitude, and dead reckoning

           

 

 Capt. David Bell is a US Coast Guard-licensed Master Mariner with three Atlantic crossings in his wake. He has served as Navigation Officer on the 360’ 4-masted barque Sea Cloud and as Captain of the brigantine Young America and schooners Spirit of Massachusetts, Amistad, Sylvina W.

Beal, Rachel and Ebenezer, A.J. Meerwald, Phoenix, and Maryleigh. His writing credits include the books Dockmanship and The Celestial Navigation Mystery: Solved, as well as articles in WoodenBoat, Cruising World, Sailing, Offshore, and Oceans magazines
